We made it to Beautiful Madrid. Thats talking about the weather. The city was full of trash. Mikah and I came right when there was a strike on from all the garbage collectors. We couldnt believe our eyes as we went out for a walk. Fruit flies flying into our faces, a horrible stench of urine and rotting garbage, rotting produce and household litter covering the streets. Garbage bins over flowing and recycling bins covered in bottles ans cardboard. When we walked into this we were mesmerized and couldnt believe what a dump this place was.
It wasnt until we went out that night to see flamenco dancers and I almost fell on my butt from something unidentifiable on the floor I asked our guide. Thats when he told us about the strike. It was held because during high times and low times they were paid the same from the US government. This is going to be a strike thats won by the workers. Garbage is accumulated every day and needs to be taken care of properly. All of the poeple living in Madrid were very embarrassed, they were also constantly apologizing for the mess.
Enough garbage talk.
We had an amazing Spanish night. We saw a flamenco dancer with a guy from our hostel. We went out and met up with others from the hostel to go to this place. We all walked around and stopped in this dark alleyway. Super confused as to where we all were we proceeded to go into a doorway. This then lead to a small room. From this small room it was into another room with a couch. Then down a tiny staircase and amazingly we saw our Sangria's. Nah just kidding we were in some sort of a cellar. There was an underground river under us and the structure we were in with 3 meter wide brick walls was to catch all of the moisture. The structure is from the 1700s and it was still standing until this day. Absolutely amazing.
Back to the Sangria's and flamenco dancer. There was a small stage at the back wall. This is where all the magic happened. A beautiful lady came in with an original dress and shoes. An guitarist and also a singer slash narrator came in. Before the show started we were told that about 10% was rehearsed (the beginning) and the rest was all improvisation. This was not noticable at all in the whole time that they were preforming together. The guitarist actually follows the dancer and there are hand motions and eye contact signals made throughout. Everything was super on key and it was also super special because it was such a small crowd. We enjoyed ourselves and our Sangria's a lot that night and I must say it was a €12,00 well spend.
The rest of the night we went out for tapas with our Chinese and Brazilian friend we made during the tour. Its amazing how late the spanish stay up for to eat and even party. We heard clubs are open until 6 or 7 in the morning, which is just outrageous. We had a late tapas dinner which consisted of cuddlefish, pork skewers, prawns, mussels with salsa, naan with hummus, potatoes. It was very delicious, but the best way maybe the free wine. Sorry me and my wine are just getting out of hand. Its consumed like water here in Europe. Or maybe thats just me? I dont even want to know.
The day was an amazing start to Madrid.
Xx
